The tree grows in the tropical rain belt of Africa from Guinea and Ghana in the west, through Nigeria, Cameroon, and Democratic Republic of Congo, to Tanzania in the east. Key species are A. Parviflora (Ghana), A. Floribunda (Nigeria) and A. Stuhlmannii (Tanzania).

In Ghana and Nigeria Allanblackia grows in areas where cassava, cocoa and plantain grow well. In Tanzania, Allanblackia appears at relatively steep slopes (Usambara mountains). Plantain, cassava and herbs grow at the same altitude and in similar landscapes as Allanblackia.
